Africa-Press – Eswatini. With the high cost of new infrastructure, repairing what already exists can be the most practical solution. Upon taking office, the Bucopho of Sigwe Thabiso Dlamini faced a pressing issue, 16 boreholes crucial for providing clean water were no longer operational. Instead of replacing them, he launched a repair initiative, bringing water back to many homesteads.
Seeing how urgently the community needed water, Bucopho Dlamini wasted no time. Sixteen boreholes across Sigwe had stopped working, leaving many households without a reliable water source. With limited resources, he turned to Rural Water of Nhlangano a trusted partner and together they managed to repair nine. This is an ongoing project.
Speaking to Eswatini Positive News Dlamini said he knew he had to act fast because water is life. “I normally get help from Rural Water. They’ve been very supportive, and without them, we wouldn’t have managed to repair as many boreholes as we have so far.
A resident from Ndunazithini under Sigwe Inkhundla confirmed the progress, saying boreholes located at Dicapol, kaMoses, and along the roadside towards Thumbela are now functional again. The resident expressed relief that efforts are being made to restore clean water access.
However, challenges remain. Seven boreholes are still out of operation, and Dlamini emphasized that work continues to secure additional funding and technical support to fix the remaining ones. “We are not stopping here. This is an ongoing project, and it is my mission to repair all the boreholes and ensure that every household has access to clean water,” he said.
Access to water remains a critical issue in rural Eswatini, where infrastructure often deteriorates due to lack of maintenance and limited resources. Bucopho Dlamini’s proactive approach demonstrates how local leadership and partnerships can bring real solutions to the community. Residents remain hopeful that all boreholes will soon be restored.
