Africa-Press – Eswatini. “Money matters, but so does your peace of mind.” That was the powerful message at the heart of the third Mental Health Support Group session hosted by Unite Against Depression (UAD) this past Saturday at the Sdwashini Social Centre, under the Municipal Council of Mbabane.

Centred on the theme “Financial Wellness,” the interactive session highlighted how money management and emotional stability are closely intertwined — and how mastering both can empower the youth to lead more balanced, fulfilled lives.

Facilitators from UAD guided participants, mainly young people, through practical discussions on budgeting, distinguishing needs from wants, and resisting peer pressure. These discussions were aimed at helping attendees develop self-discipline, confidence, and emotional balance — all key ingredients for long-term mental and financial well-being.

A brief survey conducted during the session revealed a shared challenge among participants: many struggle to stick to their spending plans once they receive money. The main reasons cited were peer influence, overspending on luxury items, and a lack of self-control. Facilitators noted that these habits often trigger emotional distress, leading to cycles of stress, guilt, and regret that undermine overall mental health.

Participants also explored their emotional responses to financial decisions, reflecting on how they felt before, during, and after spending money. Many admitted feeling anxious or excited before receiving money, but later experienced satisfaction or regret depending on how they spent it. These reflections underscored the session’s central message: financial wellness and mental health are inseparable.

“When young people learn to manage their money responsibly, they not only improve their financial security but also reduce stress and anxiety,” said one of the facilitators. “Financial awareness brings confidence, independence, and peace of mind — all essential for emotional stability.”

The session concluded with a group discussion focused on practical tools for maintaining both financial and emotional balance, including saving strategies, goal setting, and building a support network for accountability.

In closing, UAD reaffirmed its commitment to holistic youth empowerment, emphasising that true well-being extends beyond mental health to include financial literacy and community connection.

“Our goal is to create a safe space where young people can learn, express themselves, and grow — emotionally, mentally, and financially,” a UAD representative said. “Financial stability plays a vital role in achieving peace of mind, and that’s why these discussions matter.”

The Unite Against Depression Support Group meets every Saturday at the Sdwashini Social Centre, offering a welcoming environment for youth, professionals, and anyone passionate about mental wellness. The organisation continues to invite community stakeholders, financial educators, and mental health advocates to collaborate in building a generation that is mentally resilient, emotionally grounded, and financially wise.

The initiative is supported by the Municipal Council of Mbabane, demonstrating a shared vision of promoting community wellness and empowering young people to make sound, informed choices about both their finances and their mental health.
