MBABANE – Learners from 21 schools across the Lubombo Region gathered on March 6 2026 for an inspiring programme aimed at encouraging greater participation of girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The initiative was organised by the UNESCO Eswatini National Commission in partnership with the Kingdom of Eswatini Academy of Science (KEAS), bringing together students, educators and stakeholders committed to strengthening STEM education in the country.
The event provided an engaging platform where learners were introduced to opportunities within STEM fields while celebrating academic excellence among young people.
Organisers highlighted the importance of empowering girls to pursue studies and careers in science and technology, noting that these disciplines play a critical role in national development, innovation and economic growth.
Throughout the programme, learners received valuable insights into the STEM initiative and how it supports young people in developing the knowledge and skills required for the future. Participants were encouraged to nurture curiosity, creativity and determination as they continue their academic journeys.
A key highlight of the event was the recognition of students who achieved outstanding results in the Eswatini General Certificate of Secondary Education (EGCSE) and the Junior Certificate Examination (JC). The high-performing learners were honoured for their dedication and academic excellence.
Organisers noted that recognising outstanding academic achievement helps inspire other students to strive for success and remain committed to their studies.
Adding excitement to the event, learners also took part in a Rubik’s Cube challenge designed to test their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Several participants impressed the audience by completing the puzzle in under five minutes, earning applause and special recognition for their remarkable speed and accuracy.
Officials emphasised that initiatives like this form part of broader efforts to strengthen STEM education in Eswatini and to encourage more girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The programme concluded on a positive note, with organisers encouraging learners to remain focused on their studies, embrace innovation and take advantage of opportunities offered by STEM disciplines to help shape a brighter future.
