African Journalists Emphasize Critical Role of Eastern African Leaders in Fostering Peace

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Journalists from diverse nations across Eastern Africa gathered for a crucial dialogue at the POA Studio.

The discussion centered on peace, development and integration in the region.

The journalists mentioned the security and political crisis being occurred in countries such as in Sudan, Somalia, Uganda and other member states of the region. They shared their view that a lot has to be done to realize peace in the region.

A journalist from Kenya, Naliston Njagi said, “Eastern Africa is not doing well in terms of realizing peace and security. But, I believe that the majority of people in Africa have come to a realization that most of the problems we have when it comes to peace and security can only be solved by ourselves.”

The journalists emphasized the critical role of Eastern African leaders in fostering peace. They also highlighted the necessity for neighboring countries to work together in a collaborative effort to combat conflicts and crises.

They argued that regional stability could only be achieved through united actions, where countries support one another in overcoming the various challenges they face.

Moreover, the journalists recommended that African leaders should focus on building trust among themselves, rather than relying on external entities for solutions.

They pointed out that fostering strong intra-African relationships would empower the region to address its problems more effectively and independently.

Obaj Okaj, Journalist at Eye Radio in South Sudan said leaders need to build trust because peace begin by ourselves at your home and you call somebody.

“If you invite some body, that person might also invite others to come and participate. Then the conflict will be bigger, conflicts like the one happening in Rwanda with Congo. We need real dialogue and discussion between leaders.”

Serak Ramu from Standard Media in Kenya, stressed the importance of building trust between leaders of Africa.

“We need to build trust. We should trust one another. If your neighbor is Uganda, trust Ugandans because they are the closer people who can help you. Our leaders should trust one another. We need to increase dialogue. We need to communicate all the time; not when we have problems, not when we have conflicts.”

Diana, a journalist BRIDGE FM from Uganda, said, “When it comes to war, it is women and children who are most affected. We need to understand that. As media we also have a role in combating conflict.”

Furthermore, the journalists stressed the media’s responsibility in promoting dialogue and understanding among conflicting parties. By amplifying the narratives of peace builders and advocates for non-violent solutions, the media can inspire hope and encourage collaborative efforts toward conflict resolution.
