AUC Chairperson Acknowledges Role of Luanda Process, Angola's Leadership in Supporting Dialogue on Crisis in Eastern DRC

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahamoud Ali Youssouf commended the important role played by the Luanda Process, facilitated under the leadership of President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, and the African Union Chairperson.

The Chairperson further lauded President Lourenço for his sustained engagement and commitment to advancing dialogue, de-escalation, and confidence-building between the parties.

His leadership, as a Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation reflects exemplary statesmanship and the Union’s commitment to African-led solutions to African problems, Youssouf said in a statement.

The Luanda Process has contributed significantly to creating conditions for dialogue and regional and international engagement, offering a valuable platform for fostering mutual understanding in the pursuit of peace, security, and stability in Eastern DRC.

Angola is recently acting as a mediator in the eastern DRC conflict that escalated in late January when the M23 rebels took control of the strategic eastern Congo city of Goma. In February, M23 seized Bukavu, eastern Congo’s second-biggest city.

The Chairperson equally commends the statesmanship of the leaders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda for their commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution of the crisis, reflecting a shared recognition that lasting peace and stability are essential for the prosperity of their countries and the Great Lakes region.

The African Union underscores the importance of continued coordination between the AU, regional economic communities, and international partners to consolidate progress and support ongoing efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

While reaffirming the primacy of African-led initiatives, the Chairperson underscores the African Union’s unwavering commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and stability in Eastern DRC.

In line with its mandate to promote peace, security, and unity across the continent, the African Union stands ready to accompany and facilitate inclusive and coordinated engagements. In this regard, all initiatives should be designed to complement and reinforce existing African-led mechanisms, ensuring coherence, ownership, and effectiveness in addressing the prevailing challenges.
