Addis Ababa, December 5, 2025— The children and grandchildren of African leaders who made significant contributions to the Pan-African Movement and the formation of the African Union today visited the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The delegation included Okitolola Lumumba, the son of Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo; Kwame Thomas, the grandson of Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana; Kauche Kaunda, the son of Kenneth Kaunda, the first President of Zambia; Ndileka Mandela, the granddaughter of former South African President Nelson Mandela; and Godfrey Madaraka Nyerere, the son of Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania.
The visitors described the dam as a powerful symbol of Africa’s self-reliance and a testament to its commitment to utilizing natural resources for its own development.
They noted that the dam has solidified Ethiopia’s standing as a beacon of transformation, resilience, and sovereignty on the continent.
The descendants of the Pan-African Movement leaders had previously visited the Adwa Victory Memorial and the Science Museum’s permanent exhibition yesterday, and they are expected to visit other major development projects in the coming days.
