EPL: Man United players expected to ignore Ronaldo ahead of vote for new

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Manchester United players will overlook Cristiano Ronaldo when they vote for a new captain under Erik ten Hag.

The Sun reports that goalkeeper, David De Gea, is the favourite to replace Harry Maguire as the Red Devils’ captain.

Erik ten Hag will allow his Manchester United stars the chance to determine whether to allow Maguire remain as captain or vote in another.

Maguire became Manchester United’s captain just six months after joining the club from Leicester City, taken over from Ashley Young.

The 29-year-old’s form has dropped massively following the arrivals of Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, who appear to undermine his authority in the dressing room.

The England defender lost his place in United’s starting XI during the final weeks of a torrid campaign, during which he was abused by his own fans and was the target of a sickening bomb threat.

The Sun reports that there is no sense of rebellion in the air regarding the voting but the chance to start the Ten Hag era with a clean slate and a new skipper is appealing.

The Dutchman will allow his players to vote for their new skipper and a clear favourite is said to have already emerged in the form of long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea.

De Gea, who joined United ten years ago, returned to his best form last season and won the Players’ Player of the Year Award for a series of outstanding displays.

Ronaldo is also in the running but, according to the report, De Gea looks certain to win any vote amongst his teammates.
