Ethiopia and Chile have initiated a historic collaboration aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women.
A high-level Chilean delegation led by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gloria De La Fuente is here in Addis Ababa, it was indicated.
The visit marks the first time a senior Chilean official has visited Ethiopia, underscoring the deepening ties between the two nations.
It was learned that Ethiopia’s Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Ergogie Tesfaye held discussions with Chilean officials. The Minister highlighted the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Ethiopia and Chile, dating back to 1965.
She also emphasized the importance of collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, cultural diplomacy, and gender equality, noting that the two countries have consistently supported each other on multilateral platforms.
Minister Ergogie praised Chile’s pioneering Feminist Foreign Policy, making it the first South American country to implement this approach, joining other nations such as France, Canada and Spain.
Vice Minister De La Fuente said the policy advocates for gender mainstreaming in international relations to promote human rights, eliminate gender-based violence, and empower women globally.
According to her, Chile’s gender-balanced government, with women holding 14 of 24 ministerial positions, serves as a model, and Tesfaye expressed Ethiopia’s eagerness to learn from Chile’s experiences in promoting equality.
According to Ergogie,Ethiopia has made significant strides in gender equality, with women holding 50 percent of cabinet positions and 43 percent of seats in parliament. Yet, economic empowerment for women remains a priority, particularly for rural women.
Minister Ergogie emphasized the transformative potential of involving women in agriculture and the need for training, resources, and financial support, expressing hope that Chile’s expertise in agriculture could play a pivotal role.
Chile’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gloria De La Fuente outlined that his country’s Feminist Foreign Policy includes goals such as enhancing democracy, strengthening women’s representation, establishing a comprehensive care system, and integrating a gender perspective into climate action, science, and technology.
In a display of commitment to this shared vision, both nations agreed to explore collaborative programs for women in diplomacy and to facilitate knowledge exchange programs to support skill development among women and girls.
This partnership represents a milestone in Ethiopia-Chile relations, setting the stage for strengthened economic and social collaboration aimed at achieving gender equality and empowering women, it was learned.
