Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Ethiopia and Kenya emphasized the need for deepening relationship between the two countries.
This was disclosed at the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting held in Addis Ababa today.
Speaking at the occasion, African Affairs Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Fiseha Shawel said Ethiopia views the joint ministerial meeting as a meaningful event in consolidating bilateral relations.
Parallel with further enhancing the positive ties between the two countries, Ambassador Fiseha said we also timely address any situations across our borders and in the volatile region.
He mentioned challenges facing the two countries, among others, terrorism, human trafficking, small arms trafficking, illegal trade, counterfeit goods, unemployment, and cross border problems and diseases.
“Ethiopia and Kenya are bounded by geography, culture, linguistic affinities and many more bonds, which are the basis to further deepening the already existing cooperative relationship between our two countries,” he said.
The Joint Commission has been instrumental in settling outstanding bilateral regional issues and enhancing the political, economic and social interactions between our two countries.
He reiterates Ethiopia’s commitment to cooperating with Kenya on peace and security, development, and cooperation for the wellbeing of our two people.
Fiseha also assured to Kenyan delegation that the government’s commitment to deepening the long standing brotherly relationship with Kenya.
Ambassador Moi Lemoshira, Director General, Foreign Service, Political and Diplomatic Affairs of Kenya on his part said Kenya and Ethiopia shared historical relations and people to people interaction.
“The changes in the regional and global environment demand the engagement of Ethiopia and Kenya for regular interaction as we build our partnership at the bilateral level, regional and at continental level, but also internationally,” Ambassador Lemoshira said.
“As a delegation, we are here to reaffirm our strong commitment to the bilateral relations with Ethiopia and also to seek how to strengthen our historical ties for shared prosperity in the years to come,” he said.
The main objective of the JMC is to review the status of our bilateral relations with Ethiopia and to evaluate the implementation of the MOU of bilateral arrangements the two countries have signed so far.
Further, it aims to define a shared path in the future to bolster relations for the benefit of the two peoples.
It is expected that MoU will be signed between the two countries at ministerial level in the areas of common interest, it was leant.
