Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s World Trade Organization (WTO) accession negotiating team, led by Chief Negotiator and Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, Kassahun Gofe held important discussions with development partners.
The discussion was held during the 5th WTO Working Group Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ethiopia has engaged in productive conversations with various development partners about the support required to help the country achieve full membership in the WTO.
During the meeting, Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, and chief negotiator of WTO accession Kassahun Gofe, emphasized that the discussions were a continuation of the talks held on the previous day during the 5th Working Group negotiations.
During the meeting, key partners, including the World Bank, the European Union, India, China, the European Investment Fund, and the World Trade Center, reaffirmed their commitment to providing both financial and technical assistance to Ethiopia throughout the accession process.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Minister of Trade and Regional Integration and chief negotiator for Ethiopia’s WTO accession, Kassahun Gofe, held a discussion with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, regarding the WTO accession negotiation process in Ethiopia.
“We had a fruitful discussion with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, about the WTO accession negotiation process in our country,” the minister shared on his social media page.
He added, “We updated her on the progress of the bilateral and multilateral negotiations we’ve undertaken so far and highlighted the issues that will require our collective efforts in the coming period.”
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed that seeing Ethiopia as a member of the World Trade Organization is one of her key initiatives and assured us of her unwavering support.
Additionally, she informed us that she would officially reach out to the African Group and member states to garner support for Ethiopia’s membership accession negotiations, the minister stated.
