Africa-Press – Ethiopia. May 18/2021 (ENA) The Government of Ethiopia remains committed to supporting the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) in the coming short weeks to undertake the anticipated 6th national elections.
Contrary to speculations, the 6th national elections has shown a great number of voter registration, it was indicated.
One of the key areas of institutional reform in the past three years has focused on ensuring that the National Electoral Board operates independently and is equipped with capable leadership, free of political affiliations.
It noted “this has been one of our key national successes.”
Stating that there was a follow up meeting with Regional leadership and NEBE Chair on Monday, the Premier underscored “we deferred to the rational provided by the electoral board for short delay, despite our interest and readiness as a government to proceed with the originally scheduled dates.”
Considering that some of the challenges experienced in the process of preparedness lend themselves to the lack of a culture of holding free and democratic elections, Abiy added.
“I would like to assure all Ethiopians that we will do our very best to hold a better, free and fair election than previous years, setting the foundation for future elections,” he promised.
