Africa-Press – Ethiopia. The Great Run Ethiopia is proactively making a significant contribution to the expansion and progress of sports tourism in Ethiopia, General Manager of the company Dagmawit Amare said.
The 2025 Safaricom Women First 5km took place in Addis Ababa today to mark the celebrations of International Women’s Day, 8 March.
The event provided a meaningful platform to celebrate the achievements of these exceptional women while inspiring future generations.
Held under the theme “Running for Every Woman, Every Right,” the race emphasized the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
According to Dagmawit, the Great Run that has consistently taken place in Ethiopia for 25 years has played a vital role not only in nurturing and developing promising athletes who aspire to compete at both national and international levels, but it has also significantly contributed to enhancing and promoting a positive image of Ethiopia on the global stage.
The company has been actively promoting the cultural and economic significance of various cities within Ethiopia by organizing a series of competitions in all major Ethiopian cities, she stated.
She added that the government’s expansion of tourism destinations plays a crucial role in supporting the sports tourism sector.
Furthermore, she stated this particular type of competition presents a valuable opportunity to highlight and demonstrate Ethiopia’s capabilities and potential within the realm of athletics.
She observed that Ethiopia is recognized for possessing a highly advantageous landscape and climate conducive to the training and performance of athletes.
Furthermore, Entoto Park, a facility recently inaugurated by the government for public use, serves as an exemplary model that epitomizes these favorable condition, she pointed out.
Birnesh Dessie, Abezu Kebad and Mekdes Shimelis finished the race from first to third respectively
The winners were presented with awards by Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia PLC, Elsa Muzzolini, and athlete Meseret Defar.
Ambassadors, UN agency representatives, and Ethiopian women from a range of sectors participated.
