PM Abiy Ahmed Launches Digital Strategy for Prosperity

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially launched Digital Ethiopia 2030, a comprehensive national blueprint designed to harness the transformative power of technology, in order to ensure that the country’s growth is inclusive, resilient, and aligned with the nation’s identity.

The strategy arrives at a critical juncture as Ethiopia seeks to leverage its immense demographic dividend, with 70 percent of its 130 million citizens under the age of 30.

Building on the foundations of the Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, Digital Ethiopia 2030 aims to address persistent barriers, including limited digital literacy and an internet penetration rate currently at 45 percent, while increasing the digital economy’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product from its current 3.9 percent.

In his social media post regarding the launch, PM Abiy Ahmed confirmed that the nation has successfully transitioned from its previous roadmap.

“Digital Ethiopia 2025 has been completed after achieving its intended goals to an almost full extent,” he said.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the mission of this strategy is to accelerate transformation by strengthening infrastructure and fostering an indigenous digital economy.

The strategy, he noted is anchored in the principles of digital sovereignty and intentional inclusion.

“Expanding accessibility, creating equal opportunities for citizens, and strengthening trust between citizens and institutions are among the key foundational pillars of the strategy.”

To realize this vision, the government will focus on critical enablers such as reliable electricity, cyber-security, and the expansion of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Key initiatives include the nationwide rollout of high-speed broadband, the establishment of a sovereign government cloud, and the scaling of the Fayda digital ID and inter-operable payment systems.

“To ensure these pillars are realized, significant efforts will be made, particularly in expanding public digital infrastructure. This will create strong capacity for digital technology, with a people-centered approach, to improve the lives of citizens,” the premier stressed.

Furthermore, the strategy seeks to position Ethiopia as a premier destination for Digital Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by operationalizing the Startup Proclamation and launching a Digital Ethiopia Investment Roadmap.

He linked these technological advancements to the broader national vision of efficiency and governance.

“Overall, the initiatives being implemented under Digital Ethiopia are aligned with the goals of the Medemer State to realize major strategies through streamlined bureaucracy.”
