Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Africa’s vulnerability to climate change is compelling, where decarbonizing the global economy is inseparable from delivering development in #Africa, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud noted.

President Hassan Sheikh made the remarks at the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) in Addis Ababa today.

The president asserted that Somalia’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is “insignificant,” yet the country is among the world’s most vulnerable to climate effects.

He stated that the climate crisis is “taking a heavy toll on Somali people,” citing the devastating drought from 2021 to 2023, which affected “7.8 million people, nearly half of the population,” resulting in “widespread food insecurity, loss of livelihoods, and millions of internally displaced people.”

President Mohamud indicated Somalia’s recent achievements becoming the first East African nation to submit its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 and launching the “Green Somalia Initiative” to plant 10 million trees.

He noted the establishment of the National Climate Fund, citing the launch of the Green Climate Fund to accelerate 100 million partnership for Somalia in 2024.

President Mohamud concluded with a clear call to action.

He urged the international community to “deliver finance at the right scale and on the right terms” and to “operationalize and capitalize loss and damage, moving from pledges to predictable disbursements that reach front-line countries like Somalia quickly and directly.”

He emphasized that Africa’s case is “compelling and just” and that “decarbonizing the global economy is inseparable from delivering development in Africa,” urging the summit to mark “from declarations to delivery together.”
