Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s Livestock Development Institute disclosed that it has earned some 74 million US dollars in revenue over the last 10 months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year.

Deputy Director General of the institute, Sahlu Mulu told ENA over 24,200 tons of animal products were supplied to the foreign market during the past 10 months.

The institute initially planned to export close to 26,000 tons of animal and animal products, it was learned.

The deputy director pointed out that the research, technical and consulting support and capacity building activities have been carried on livestock products in order to make it more industrialized and maximize the export revenue.

Sahlu indicated that some 74 million US dollars have been earned in revenue from the exports of animal products during the past ten months, almost 65 percent of the plan.

The revenue has been gained from exporting meat, honey, camel milk and offal products to different countries around the globe, it was indicated.

The institute also stated that it has been working hard to secure 140 million US dollars from livestock and animal products at the end of this fiscal year.

The deputy director explained that the increase in the price of domestic production inputs and the stagnant prices of processed animal products in the destination countries, the security challenges in destination markets, illegal trade, and the issue of product quality have remained major bottlenecks in the sphere.

However, concerted efforts have been intensified to diversify the destinations of those products and find alternative markets, Sahlu revealed.
