Africa-Press – Ethiopia. The South African Police Service has sent a team of investigators to Paris to probe the death of ambassador Nathi Mthethwa.
Mthethwa’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Regency hotel in Paris, it was learned.
A team of five senior police investigators is anticipated to work with French authorities probing the death of ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, whose body was found in a Paris hotel courtyard after a fall from the 22nd floor, officials said.
National police commissioner Fannie Masemola said the officers would support a thorough and transparent inquest alongside French counterparts.
Mthethwa, 58, was reported missing by his wife a day earlier after she received a troubling message.
A French prosecutor told local media the note apologised and indicated an intent to end his life.
While questions about possible foul play have surfaced, initial findings point to a deliberate act. Formalities are under way to repatriate his remains.
A former police minister and ally of ex-president Jacob Zuma, Mthethwa was named in multiple judicial inquiries over the years.
He oversaw policing during the 2012 Marikana massacre, when 34 striking miners were killed, and was cited two weeks ago in testimony alleging interference in policing. The Madlanga Commission has not said whether it sought his testimony.
