Ethiopians from all walks of life including teenagers have been united in a historic nationwide tree-planting campaign, aiming to set a new milestone by planting 700 million saplings in a single day.
The campaign, held under the theme “Renewal through Planting,” is part of Ethiopia’s broader effort to plant 7.5 billion seedlings during the current rainy season.
In the Central Ethiopia Region, students who planted seedlings on Arba Minch’s Ganta Mountain shared their insights about the significance of trees and their role in protecting the environment.
The teenagers were inspired to plant seedlings after seeing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on television planting saplings with his son.
A grade 6th student at Arba Minch Siqela Mulu Primary School, Zetseat Tariku said that Seedlings are a vital natural resource contributing to the freshness of our breath and enhancing air quality.
She mentioned that her school taught her that trees produce oxygen essential for human life.
Excited to participate, she eagerly joined in today’s one-day tree-planting campaign with her entire family
Absalom Mulatu, a grade two student, on his part shared that, based on what he learned from his parents, the campaign helps protect Arba Minch from flooding and sedimentation.
Absalom explained that the seedling planting program takes place during the summer, when schools are closed, allowing him to plant trees alongside teenagers of his village.
Habtamu Matso, a fourth-grade student at Bola Gurba Primary School in Arba Minch, said that Planting tree seedlings as part of the GLI provides shade, offering students a restful spot to relax beneath the trees after class.
Planting trees is vital for maintaining ecological balance, fostering resilience to climate change, and preventing drought, he noted; emphasizing as he learned in school that fostering harmony with nature can be achieved by planting seedlings.
