Senior officials from the Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to President Adama Barrow at the State House, presenting an overview of the organization’s recent achievements and outlining its ongoing humanitarian initiatives nationwide.
The meeting, part of the GRCS’s annual tradition of engagement with the presidency, focused on disaster response, public health programs, youth empowerment, and the Society’s role in strengthening community resilience. The delegation, led by GRCS President Fabakary Kalleh and Secretary General Ebou Faye Njie, also discussed operational challenges and international collaborations that are shaping the organization’s strategic direction.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Njie emphasized that the visit served a dual purpose: to update the president and to formally invite him to launch an ambitious new health initiative.
“Today’s visit was very special, not only briefing or updating on what we do, “Mr. Njie told reporters, “but most specifically to extend an invitation to him (the President) to launch the Malaria Project, funded by the Chinese International Development Agency,” he said.
The project aims to bolster national efforts to eradicate malaria, a disease that continues to pose significant public health challenges in The Gambia.
Fabakary Kalleh, President of the Red Cross Society, highlighted the GRCS’s growing prominence on the international stage, describing its evolution into one of Africa’s most effective national Red Cross societies.
“One of the key issues that we discuss is the position of the Gambia Red Cross Society in the international world. We have made a lot of progress, being recognized as one of the well-functioning national societies in Africa. With all our structures being in place and the fact that is happening, The Gambia Red Cross is placing not only The Gambia Red Cross but The Gambia Government in the international humanitarian mark,” Mr. Kalleh said.
He noted that The Gambia Red Cross recently served as vice president of the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement—an influential forum that convenes every four years to shape the policies of the global humanitarian network.
The meeting, officials said, reaffirmed the close partnership between the GRCS and the Government of The Gambia, rooted in a shared commitment to strengthening the nation’s capacity to respond to crises and support vulnerable communities.
“Recently we held the international conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement; this is an event of all Red Cross structures with the government, and that happens every four years, and we are lucky to be the vice president of the conference,” he said.
