Alimamy Gibba, Member of the National Assembly for Foni Kansala, has voiced strong concern over President Adama Barrow’s decision to redeploy Auditor General Modou Ceesay to a ministerial post, cautioning that the move could weaken financial oversight and impede ongoing investigations into government misconduct.
President Barrow recently appointed Ceesay—whose audits have exposed significant financial irregularities—as Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from Hon. Gibba.
“This is not just a reshuffle—it is a major misstep at a critical time in our democratic evolution,” Mr. Gibba stated. “Mr. Ceesay is best positioned where he currently serves—as Auditor General. He and his team have earned the nation’s trust by unearthing serious financial discrepancies and holding institutions accountable.”
Gibba recounted that under Ceesay’s leadership, the National Audit Office has conducted high-profile audits, including investigations into the Gambia Groundnut Corporation, SWEED projects, and the government’s 2021-2022 accounts. The office has also flagged inefficiencies across government departments and sought, unsuccessfully, access to revenue data from the Gambia Revenue Authority.
The Foni Kansala NAM warned that redeploying Ceesay at this juncture could stall critical audits, embolden corrupt practices, and undermine recent gains in public sector accountability. He urged the president to reconsider the reassignment, emphasizing that “the national interest must override political convenience.”
“Reassigning Mr. Ceesay at this critical juncture undermines our fight for accountability,” Gibba said. “It sends the wrong message to the Gambian people.”
He concluded by urging the reinstatement of Mr. Ceesay, emphasizing that his leadership is crucial to “ensuring every Dalasi is accounted for” and guaranteeing that no state institution escapes rigorous oversight.
