Africa-Press – Gambia. Economist and leader of the yet-to-be-formalized Patriotic Progressive Alliance, Dr. Ousman Gajigo, has expressed full confidence that President Adama Barrow would win if he were to face Ousainou Darboe again. Speaking in an interview with Kerr Fatou, Dr. Gajigo stated he is “100% certain” of Barrow’s victory.
He explained that he believes the United Democratic Party (UDP) lost the 2021 presidential election fairly, noting that Gambians had multiple options but chose Barrow.
“I am 100% certain that if Darboe and Barrow contest again, Barrow will win; that is my belief,” he said.
Dr. Gajigo acknowledged that some UDP supporters and leaders may view the 2021 election as rigged, but he argued that the margin of Barrow’s victory was too wide to attribute to malpractice.
“I don’t believe that NPP’s winning in the 2021 elections was based on cheating. I think UDP lost, and that is my belief. Gambians have options to vote for Ousainou Darboe, but they choose Adama Barrow, so for him to come back, even some people in their party, including some leaders, do not want that,” he added.
While recognizing that President Barrow has not fully met public expectations, Dr. Gajigo said the Gambian desire for change extends beyond the current president to the broader political landscape.
“When we say change in the Gambia, it is not only Barrow; most of these parties here should also make changes. UDP is an opposition party, but they were once in government. President Barrow’s first three years was a UDP government. If you see we form our parties and we don’t join other political parties, it is because we are not impressed by most of these political parties,” he said.
Dr. Gajigo also emphasized that while Ousainou Darboe and other UDP leaders deserve respect for their sacrifices under former President Jammeh’s regime, national progress should not rely solely on individual figures. “But the country’s progress—you don’t have to look at individuals alone; there is no individual that the country is not bigger than,” he said.
He concluded with a call for unity among political actors, suggesting that collaborative efforts are essential for the country’s development. “We will pray for all of us to join and become one. One party cannot do it; we should discuss and see what can benefit the country and do that,” he said.
