New Youth-Led Movement Calls for New Era in Governance

Africa-Press – Gambia. A new youth-led movement has made a clarion call for young Gambians to participate in shaping a new model of governance in the country.

In a bold break from the country’s tradition of personality-driven politics, the newly formed movement Believe for National Transformation (BNT) Saturday launched the nationwide call.

The announcement, made at Bijilo Nursery School, outlined BNT’s vision for a youth-led, collective leadership structure that prioritizes strong institutions over the “strongman” approach that has long defined Gambian politics.

“We stand for strong systems over strong men,” BNT executive member Modou Mbaye told attendees. “We will build institutions that function based on rules, not personalities.”

BNT is inviting Gambians especially youth to apply for positions on a proposed governing council with one representative from each local government area. Selection will be merit-based, emphasizing integrity, competency, and genuine community engagement, overseen by an independent committee to ensure transparency and fairness.

In his address, Mr. Mbaye highlighted challenges facing the nation: over 76% of Gambians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, while 63% of youth are considering leaving in search of better opportunities abroad.

He also pointed to underutilized agricultural land, high living costs, and weak institutions as barriers to sustainable development.

The movement’s agenda goes beyond elections. It focuses on youth empowerment, economic transformation, decentralization, and accountability, aiming to cultivate leaders who prioritize systemic reform over personal gain.

“Change is inevitable. The only question is whether we will shape it or be shaped by it,” Mr. Mbaye said, urging citizens to step forward and participate in creating a Gambia where governance is guided by principles, not personalities.
