Africa-Press – Gambia. Victims of recent fire outbreak at Albert Market have received cash donations amounting to D56,235 from philanthropists and market committees to support their recovery efforts.
The presentation ceremony was held at the office of the Albert Market Chairman in Banjul.
According to officials, D27,360 of the total amount was contributed by individual donors, including Yusupha Sillah and his team. The Tallinding Market Committee donated D3,875, while the Banjul Market Committee contributed D15,000. The Chairman of the Banjul Market, Salifu K. Jaiteh, personally donated D10,000 towards the fund.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Jaiteh underscored the importance of solidarity and community support during difficult times, noting that the victims were fellow traders and members of the same business community.
“The fire incident two months ago was very unfortunate. We sympathize with the victims. While such incidents are beyond human control, it is our responsibility to stand by them in this moment. That is why we mobilized these funds to support them in reopening their businesses and recovering from their losses,” he said.
Two beneficiaries, Omar Sey and Momodou Janga, expressed appreciation for the support received. They said the assistance would help them resume their businesses and pledged that the funds would be used for the intended purpose. They also expressed confidence in the market management during the difficult period.
In December, a fire engulfed Albert Market, destroying goods and property and leaving many traders counting significant economic losses.
