2022 CHAN Qualifiers: Liberia Drawn against Senegal

Africa-Press – Gambia. Liberia’s home based national team have been drawn against Senegal in the WAFU Zone A 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

The draw for the 2022 CHAN qualifiers was held in Cairo on Thursday.

The seeding system for the tournament was based on the results of the last three editions of CHAN, where Liberia were among the lowest-ranked sides.

A total of 46 nations were entered in the draw for the expanded tournament for locally-based players which will feature 18 teams for the first time.

The aggregate winner from the match between Liberia and Senegal will face Guinea in the final round of the Zone qualifiers. Three teams will qualify from the zone.

First round first leg matches will be played between 22 and 24 July with the return legs a week later.

Liberia suffered a 3-1 aggregate defeat against the Senegalese when both teams last met in the 2020 CHAN qualifiers.

The local-based Lone Star secured a 1-0 win in the first-leg through Christopher Jackson’s lone goal, but succumbed to a 3-0 away to the Senegalese.

Hosts Algeria, defending champions Morocco and fellow North Africans Libya are already assured of spots at the tournament.

Zimbabwe were included in the draw for the Southern Zone qualifiers despite currently being banned from global football by FIFA and having been thrown out of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“In case the suspension of Zimbabwe FA is not lifted two weeks before their first match, they will be considered losers and eliminated from the competition,” CAF explained.
