Africa-Press – Gambia. The Managing Director of Africmed International Hospital, Dr. Omar Jagne, has been appointed and inaugurated as Chairperson of the Anti-Doping and Sports Medicine Committee of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC).
The position, along with other committee and commission roles, carries a three-year tenure.
Dr. Jagne, a prominent health expert, was inaugurated on Wednesday, 29th October, at a colorful ceremony held at the GNOC conference room. His appointment, according to the GNOC Executive Director Muhamed K. Janneh, reflects his merit, dedication, and professionalism in The Gambia’s medical sector.
“Dr. Jagne’s participatory role in driving the medical sector is widely recognized and respected. He is a medical expert with integrity who works diligently to achieve results,” Janneh said, noting that his contribution to improving the health sector is “immeasurable.” He added that there is confidence in Dr. Jagne’s ability to lead the committee successfully.
The GNOC established the Anti-Doping and Sports Medicine Committee to safeguard athlete health, ensure adherence to international anti-doping regulations, and promote clean and ethical sports. The committee’s work aligns with standards set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO).
Among its key responsibilities, the committee will ensure anti-doping compliance, coordinate medical support for athletes, and advise the GNOC Executive Bureau on medical and anti-doping matters. This includes facilitating in-competition and out-of-competition testing, educating athletes and officials on anti-doping rules, providing medical services during training and competitions, and supporting policy development related to athlete health and integrity.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Jagne thanked the GNOC for the trust placed in him and highlighted his priorities, including the development and training of personnel in sports medicine and anti-doping, raising awareness about the dangers of banned substances, promoting fair play, and encouraging ethical behavior in sports.
Dr. Jagne also represents The Gambia on the Regional Anti-Doping Organization Board, which includes representatives from Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
