Africa-Press – Gambia. Amadou Sanneh, National Treasurer of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and aspirant for the party’s flagbearer position, has outlined his vision for addressing Gambia’s pressing economic and social challenges.

Speaking to journalists following his interview with the party’s vetting committee, Sanneh emphasized that the country faces critical issues in the areas of economy, agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure—areas he believes he is well-positioned to improve.

“Gambia is at a crossroads; we know the difficulties that we are facing in our socioeconomic life. The challenges in this country are enormous, and I think, really looking at all the odds, I see that I can present myself as a possible solution,” Sanneh stated.

On the party’s vetting process, he described his experience as constructive, acknowledging that while challenges exist, they can be addressed as the process progresses.

“The process is going on fine; there can be issues and problems, but one needs to tackle them, and we move along,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure as finance minister, Sanneh highlighted his efforts to stabilize the economy, manage national debt, and attract international development support. “We turned the economy around, the foreign exchange was stable, inflation was stabilized somewhere around 6%, I was able to lead my team to the Brussels conference, and we raised 1.4 billion euros for Gambia’s development; if those pledges had come in to this country, we could have turned it into a paradise,” he noted.

Sanneh also outlined his priorities for youth and women, promising to create opportunities in agriculture, agribusiness, poultry, and rice production.

“We have to invest in ourselves, especially the youth. In my quick impact programs, we can raise 200 million for youth. The women, also, likewise, will do the same,” he said.

He emphasized plans to modernize agriculture through high-impact technology and innovations aimed at boosting productivity and economic growth.

Sanneh criticized the current government’s economic management, attributing rising prices and currency instability to flawed fiscal policies.

“You see, the high prices are linked with economic management. Today, the dollar is 73 or more. It has failed the country. It has failed the consumers and the market,” he said.

Regarding the UDP flagbearer race, Sanneh expressed his respect for the outcome of the process. “You know, when you look for something, you either get it or you don’t. So you cannot say, I must get it. We believe in the process,” he concluded.
