AU Launches Early Warning Platform

Africa-Press – Gambia. Paul Shalala-The African Union has launched an early warning platform aimed at preventing conflicts and promoting peace building on the continent.

The launch was held at the KENNETH KAUNDA Wing of the Mulungushi International Conference Center in Lusaka this morning on the sidelines of the ongoing fourth African Union Mid Year Coordination Meeting.

African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson MONIQUE NSANZABAGANWA says the Inter-Regional Knowledge Exchange on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention -I-RECKE will play a crucial role in preventing conflicts in Africa.

Dr. NSANZABAGANWA says the early warning platform will also be tasked to detect and communicate threats to peace on the continent.

She says at the moment, threats to peace are becoming complex and there is need for member countries to also invest in their own early warning systems.

Dr. NSANZABAGANWA says the I-RECKE platform is expected to build resilience and stability on the continent and sharing of information will be enhanced among member countries.

And, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa -COMESA- Secretary General CHILESHE KAPWEPWE says the I-RECKE platform is welcome as it will promote peace on the continent.

Ms KAPWEPWE says COMESA has been working on its own Structural Vulnerability Focus which is promoting peace and security in its member countries.

Other continental bodies that have welcomed the early warning platform are the East African Standby Force, the Economic Community of West African States -ECOWAS, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development -IGAD and many others.
