Africa-Press – Gambia. During deliberations on the 2026 draft estimates of revenue and expenditure, National Assembly Member Bakary K. Badjie of Foni Bintang lodged an objection to the legislature’s own proposed recurrent budget, setting himself apart from colleagues who endorsed the allocation without dissent.
The Committee of Supply was considering whether the National Assembly’s budget line should stand as presented for the 2026 fiscal year. Every member supported the proposal—except Mr. Badjie.
Some lawmakers accused him of opposing the measure to court attention on social media, suggesting his stance was more performative than substantive. Mr. Badjie rejected those claims and maintained his position.
According to the 2026 budget estimates, the National Assembly’s total allocation would rise to D569,160,811, up from D422,062,476 approved for 2025. The basic salary component alone is projected to increase from D74,864,476 in 2025 to D115,070,811 in 2026. The draft also includes increases across a wide range of allowances, including responsibility, robing, car, residential, sitting, special, telephone, and constituency allowances.
