Africa-Press – Gambia. The cities of Banjul and Nanning on Monday renewed their long-standing partnership with the signing of a cooperation agreement that city officials described as a significant step toward strengthening development initiatives between the two municipalities.
At a ceremony in Banjul, Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe announced the handover of three waste-management trucks from Nanning, the capital of China’s Guangxi region. The vehicles, she said, were custom-designed to meet the specific needs of Banjul’s sanitation system.
“At today’s memorable ceremony, 3 waste management trucks were officially handed over to my office. These trucks, which were custom-designed and assembled, are specific to the needs of our city,” Mayor Lowe said.
The agreement also includes the provision of solar street lights and expanded technical cooperation in waste management—an area the mayor said is now benefiting from a more research-driven approach. “We are proud that our efforts towards waste management are now taking a thorough R&D approach,” Mayor Lowe added.
She credited China’s ambassador to The Gambia, Liu Jin, for helping advance the partnership. “I would like to extend thanks from myself and the people of Banjul to His Excellency Ambassador Liu Jin, without whose continued support and intervention, these historic moments wouldn’t be possible,” she said.
Officials said the renewed partnership aims to support vulnerable communities and promote sustainable urban development. Additional areas of cooperation, they noted, will be announced as the initiatives move from planning to implementation.
