Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow on Friday addressed the nation following a deadly maritime incident off the coast of Jinack Village, describing the tragedy as a painful reminder of the life-threatening risks associated with irregular migration.
In a somber national address on January 2, 2026, the president expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the number of passengers still missing after the boat accident. He extended condolences to grieving families and assured them of the nation’s solidarity.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of The Gambia, I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Mr. Barrow said. Acknowledging the anguish of relatives awaiting news, he added that the country stood with them “at this painful moment.”
The president said the government had activated its emergency response plan, deploying resources to support ongoing search and rescue operations and to assist survivors. “Government has deployed adequate resources to intensify efforts and provide immediate assistance to the survivors,” he said.
Mr. Barrow praised the swift response of the Gambian Navy and commended health workers for their efforts to treat the injured. He lauded naval personnel for what he described as a “courageous and determined response” and thanked doctors, nurses, paramedics, and staff at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital for working tirelessly to save lives and comfort victims.
Urging calm as rescue operations continued, the president said authorities would provide updates as identities of the victims were confirmed. He called on citizens to remain supportive and compassionate while security and humanitarian agencies carried out their work.
The president also announced that the government would launch a full investigation into the incident, pledging that anyone found responsible would be held accountable under the law.
He concluded by offering prayers for those who lost their lives, recovery for the injured, and strength for affected families, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting lives and addressing the risks that continue to drive irregular migration.
