Barrow Hails Milestone in GAF Officer Training

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow on Wednesday commissioned the first batch of cadets trained under Course 01 of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), describing the event as a milestone in the development of structured military officer training in The Gambia.

Speaking at the commissioning parade in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the GAF, President Barrow said the programme lays the foundation for in-country officer training and the future establishment of a national military academy.

He said the course was designed to develop cadets’ mental resilience, physical endurance and leadership capacity, in line with professional military standards. He noted that the training emphasised the principles of “Command, Example and Responsibility.”

President Barrow commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Mamat O.A. Cham, and the GAF Training School for their roles in initiating and successfully delivering the programme, saying it strengthens institutional values and operational culture within the armed forces.

He described the cadet commissioning course as a key component of the GAF officer development pipeline, stressing the importance of discipline, structured training and ethical leadership in preparing officers capable of effective command.

The president also thanked the families of the cadets for their support during the training period, noting their contribution to the success of the programme.

He highlighted government investments in the security sector since 2017, including training opportunities at the University of The Gambia and military institutions abroad. He said more than 100 GAF personnel have received overseas training in countries including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, India and Senegal.

Barrow also referenced the Terms and Conditions of Service Act (2024), saying it aims to improve welfare and remuneration within the security services.

Addressing the newly commissioned officers, he urged them to uphold discipline, integrity and professionalism, and to prioritise national interest over personal considerations. He warned that the evolving global security environment requires continuous learning and the adoption of modern technologies to enhance operational effectiveness.

He congratulated the cadets and wished them success in their military careers.
