Barrow Pledges Accountability in Jammeh’S Asset Sales

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has expressed his commitment to ensuring that anyone found responsible for irregularities in the sale of assets belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh will face full legal consequences. Speaking to the nation on Wednesday, the president emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding transparency and accountability.

In his address, President Barrow outlined that his government has always prioritized cooperation with the National Assembly and the National Audit Office, both of which are currently investigating the matter. The findings of these inquiries will be made public, and his administration will rigorously implement their recommendations to address any discovered shortcomings.

“Within the arrangements of our constitutional framework, I have always prioritised acting in collaboration with the National Assembly and the National Audit Office, both of which are already conducting inquiries into the matter.

Their findings will be made public, and my government will enforce their recommendations to address the shortcomings discovered and hold accountable any individual or entity found culpable,” the president said.

The president recalled that the findings of the Janneh Commission of Inquiry, which concluded in March 2019, informed a government white paper issued in September 2019—a document he endorsed to promote transparency and accountability in public affairs.

“In May 2019, acting on the Justice Ministry’s recommendation, I authorized a Ministerial Taskforce to oversee the lawful and transparent disposal of the said assets. The Taskforce has since been reporting regularly to Cabinet. Disclosures by the Ministry of Justice confirm, however, that certain transactions, which include the sale of livestock, tractors, vehicles, and other valuables, were conducted during the active proceedings of the Commission,” the president said.

He stated that after learning these revelations—some for the first time—he immediately called an emergency Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, to urgently address the matter.

“My initial reaction would have been to establish an independent investigative panel to get to the bottom of every aspect of the sales,” he said.President Barrow reaffirmed to Gambians that all recovered assets rightfully belong to the people and stressed that his government will not condone any form of negligence or misconduct in the management of national resources.

“We are committed to full transparency in whatever we undertake on behalf of the people, and I pledge that lessons learned from this incident will be used to fortify our institutions and systems against future lapses. Until we receive the report on the ongoing investigations, I urge you all to remain calm, law-abiding, and reassured that this matter will be handled within the ambit of the law.” President Barrow stated.
