Barrow Pledges Support to Hajj Commission for Affordability

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow on Wednesday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the National Hajj Commission in reforming Hajj operations and ensuring the pilgrimage remains affordable for Gambian pilgrims.

Speaking at the State House, President Barrow commended the commission for its efforts in safeguarding the welfare of pilgrims and urged it to adapt to evolving Saudi regulations to guarantee broader participation in the annual pilgrimage.

“The President congratulated the members of the National Hajj Commission for working diligently on the welfare of Gambian pilgrims throughout the Hajj process. As the Saudi regulations on Hajj are evolving, President Barrow encouraged them to adapt in order to ensure better participation of Gambians in the spiritual journey. He assured them of continuous Government support in reforming Hajj operations and keeping this essential service affordable to Gambians,” a State House statement read.

On behalf of the commission, Amirul Hajj Sheikh Imam Ebrima Jarju thanked President Barrow for the audience and provided a briefing on the previous pilgrimage, the challenges faced, and ongoing preparations for future Hajj seasons.

He also expressed appreciation to the government for its support through the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, as well as The Gambia International Airlines and other partners.

“Sheikh Jarju briefed the President on the previous pilgrimage to Mecca, challenges encountered, and the ongoing preparations for the forthcoming Hajj season. He expressed gratitude to the Gambian government for the good working relationship through the Ministries of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, and Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, as well as The Gambia International Airlines and others,” the statement concludes.
