Barrow Pushes Stronger Rules to Boost Africa’S Intra-Trade

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has called for clearer rules and stronger commitment among African nations to maximise trade within the continent, describing intra-African trade as vital for economic growth and job creation.

The Gambian leader made the remarks on Monday, 21 July 2025, when he received the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), H.E. Wamkele Mene, and his delegation during a courtesy visit at State House in Banjul.

President Barrow commended the AfCFTA team for their efforts and urged them to set clear guidelines that would guarantee the free movement of people and goods. “When all members respect the rules, we can achieve our goals. Africa must prioritise industrialisation and intra-trade,” Barrow emphasised.

He further noted that a united Africa, backed by firm political will, can make the AfCFTA’s implementation impactful enough to lift the continent’s economy to new heights. He said The Gambia, despite its size, has taken significant steps to align the AfCFTA protocols with its National Development Plan, ‘YIRIWA’, creating opportunities for industrialisation, job creation and food security.

President Barrow also encouraged the AfCFTA Secretariat to remain committed to their task and develop sustainable strategies to help Africa overcome its trade challenges.

Secretary General Mene assured the President of the AfCFTA’s commitment to mobilise resources and partners to support The Gambia’s development goals. He revealed that an action plan and roadmap have been drawn up to assist The Gambia in areas such as trade and infrastructure, tackling challenges with urgency.

Key issues discussed during the meeting included boosting Africa’s productive capacity, establishing special economic zones, enhancing agriculture, and reducing dependency on imports from other regions.

The meeting concluded with renewed calls for stronger collaboration among African countries to unlock the full benefits of the free trade area and strengthen the continent’s position in the global economy.
