Barrow Questions UDP Strength Ahead of 2026 Election

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has cast doubt on the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) ability to unseat him in the 2026 presidential election, citing internal divisions within the main opposition party.

Speaking to Chiefs and Alkalolu from the Central River Region North at his residence in Mankamang Kunda, President Barrow said the UDP is currently fractured into rival factions, a situation he believes weakens their electoral prospects.

“There is a big fight in my father’s compound—a very serious fight, one that could even lead to them turning against each other,” Barrow said. “The compound is now divided into three: my father, Ousainu Darboe, has his compound; Talib Bensouda has his compound; and Lamin J. Darboe has his compound,” he explained.

The president asserted that even when the UDP was united, it could not defeat him, questioning how a divided opposition could possibly succeed now.

“If they are divided and each stands alone, how could they possibly bring down President Barrow?” he lamented.

However, Barrow cautioned his audience not to underestimate the opposition, alleging that the party and its affiliates have resorted to disinformation and bribery as political tactics. He claimed that their goal is to tarnish his reputation and that of his allies because they recognize their electoral disadvantage.

Drawing an analogy, the president likened the opposition’s efforts to a hunter who kills a lion only to feed it to vultures. “Who will allow that?” he asked rhetorically.
