Barrow Unveils D117M Women’S Enterprise Fund

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has unveiled D117 million initiative aimed at empowering women across The Gambia through entrepreneurship.

The announcement came during a joint meeting in Sanunding village, Tumana District as President Barrow continues his Meet-The-People-Tour, on Saturday. The project, coordinated by the Ministry of Gender, is expected to benefit 2,340 women across all regions of the country.

President Barrow explained that beneficiaries would undergo an intensive three-month entrepreneurial training program before receiving financial support to start their businesses.

“After their training, we will share D117 million among them to start their businesses. In Banjul, 103 women will benefit, 216 in Kanifing, 501 in the West Coast Region, 203 in Lower River Region, 515 in Central River Region, 463 in Upper River Region, and 253 in the North Bank Region,” the President said.

He emphasized that the funding is a grant, not a loan, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting women’s economic participation.

In the same event, 20 women’s groups, comprising 2,411 members from the area, received D1.9 million from the Ministry of Gender.

On the issue of groundnut pricing, President Barrow acknowledged public concern and said discussions were ongoing to determine the best price. He assured that an official announcement would be made as the presidential tour continues.

The women’s enterprise fund is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance economic opportunities for women, boost entrepreneurship, and encourage self-sufficiency across communities.
