Barrow’S Jammeh Remarks Draw Fire from MC Cham Jr.

Africa-Press – Gambia. MC Cham Jr., business councilor at the Kanifing Municipal Council and a senior figure in the opposition-aligned Unite Movement for Change, sharply criticized President Adama Barrow on Saturday for remarks the president delivered during a recent tour of the Foni region, accusing him of deflecting from the country’s most urgent challenges.

President Barrow, speaking during his annual constitutionally mandated “Meet With the People” tour, devoted a substantial portion of his address in Foni to his predecessor, Yahya Jammeh, who has lived in exile since his ouster in 2017. The comments prompted a swift rebuttal from Mr. Cham, who called the president’s rhetoric “a national disgrace.”

“President Barrow’s remarks in Foni are a national disgrace,” Cham said.

In a statement, Mr. Cham faulted Mr. Barrow for looking backward at political grievances rather than addressing issues that, he said, dominate the daily lives of ordinary Gambians. “Not the price of rice. Not the suffering of farmers. Not the collapse of our hospitals. Not corruption in his government. Just Jammeh,” he said.

Mr. Cham accused the president, now nearing the end of his second term, of “panic” and “outdated politics,” arguing that continued references to Mr. Jammeh suggest an absence of policy direction. “A whole president, nearing two terms, is still campaigning against a man who has been gone since 2017,” he said. “That is not leadership; that is panic.”

He urged the government to redirect its attention toward governance failures and economic hardship, saying Gambians have grown weary of political battles rooted in the past. “Gambians are tired of this outdated politics. We want solutions. We want accountability. We want a leader who faces today’s problems, not a president trapped in yesterday’s battles,” he said.
