Africa-Press – Gambia. The Banjul City Council (BCC) has announced that, as of August 2025, it has disbursed over D1 million in scholarships to students, with a further D1.31 million committed for educational support through the remainder of the year.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the Council said the initiative reflects its commitment to expanding educational access and empowering the youth of the capital.
Beneficiaries include students enrolled at the University of The Gambia (UTG), the Gambia Law School, senior secondary schools, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres, and other accredited institutions. According to BCC, the disbursements were made directly to institutions to cover tuition fees, registration costs, and other academic expenses.
“These funds have supported tuition fees, registration costs, and other academic expenses, providing vital relief to many families and enabling students to pursue their studies uninterrupted,” the council stated.
The council further explained that all scholarship applications undergo rigorous review by an independent scholarship board established to ensure transparency, fairness, and the prioritisation of deserving students, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds.
“The scholarship programme forms part of BCC’s broader vision to invest in human capital, promote inclusive development, and empower the next generation of leaders,” the statement read. “The council remains in active collaboration with schools, guardians, community stakeholders, and local institutions to ensure this vital support reaches those who need it most.”
BCC concluded by encouraging interested students and guardians to follow its official communication channels for updates on future application periods, eligibility criteria, and related announcements.
