Chairman urges Barrow to ‘reconcile with UDP before it’s too late’

The UDP chairman for the Kanifing municipality, Falang Sonko has called on President Barrow to apologise to Ousainu Darboe and reconcile with the UDP before it is too late.

Speaking at a UDP rally in Banjulinding recently, Mr Sonko said all is not lost for the Gambian leader if he could swallow his pride and reconcile with his former party.

He said: “For 22 years we were together fighting against Jammeh. We were killed and tortured but we never gave up.

Barrow’s intention should be to bring the UDP together and not to destroy it. He should be grateful to the party. We have not done anything wrong to him,” he said.

Sonko said he had advised the president many times but he did not heed his counsel.

“He ignored my advice. I advised him to put aside his five-year ambition.

If he wants to contest again, he could be given the chance. I made it clear to him that nobody can destroy the UDP.”

Sonko said he has also told Barrow not to allow anyone fool him over his chances of winning election without the UDP.

“The best thing for him to do is to buy colanut and apologise to Ousainu Darboe and the UDP and return as one family.

But if he fails to do that, we shall see. Sacking supporters of the party [from public offices] will just make things more difficult [for him],” he  added
