Africa-Press – Gambia. District Chiefs in the North Bank Region have commended President Adama Barrow’s government for the expansion of power supply to rural communities.
The Chief of Lower Nuimi, George L. Sonko, praised the initiative, saying the extension of electricity to communities in Lower Nuimi and surrounding areas has brought renewed hope and economic opportunities for residents, including small business operators, tailors and welders.
Speaking to The Voice newspaper on Tuesday in Essau ahead of the inauguration of electricity supply to Njongon village by President Barrow, Chief Sonko described the project as historic noting that access to electricity for the first time in several rural communities would significantly improve livelihoods and boost local development.
He said the availability of electricity is expected to enhance productivity, encourage the utilisation of skills and stimulate economic activity across the region.
For his part, Chief Alagie Jagne of Njaba Kunda said the expansion of electricity supply in Central Badibou would accelerate economic growth, strengthen security and improve healthcare service delivery. He described the rural electrification project as another milestone in the country’s development agenda.
The Central Badibou chief also thanked the government for coming up with plans to construct a road linking Kerr Pateh Koreh through Daru Rilwan to the main Kerewan–Farafenni highway, noting that the project would facilitate the movement of goods and services.
He further highlighted the recent award of a contract for the construction of the Minteh Kunda–Njawara road under the GIRAV project, saying it would improve transportation of agricultural produce to markets and enhance security response to criminal activities.
Regional and district authorities expressed appreciation to President Barrow for fulfilling campaign promises, emphasising that access to electricity has had a positive impact on the lives and livelihoods of rural communities.
