Africa-Press – Gambia. staff and students and other volunteers on Saturday cleaned up the popular Iyana Iba Market and some other places around the institution in commemoration of the World Clean-up Day.
The university’s Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSED) organised the event to
create sanitation awareness to build a sustainable environment.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that World Clean-up Day is celebrated on Sept. 17 yearly, during which volunteers and partners come together to rid the planet of trash, cleaning up littered and mismanaged wastes from beaches, rivers and streets.LASU’s Assistant Director in charge of CESSED, Dr Oluwakemi Tovide, said during the exercise that there was need to create clean-up awareness in the university and communities around it.

The vision and aim of the vice-chancellor of LASU is to take the institution to a greater height.
That is why the programme is different this year from previous ones.“We want to make sure that the whole world, including LASU as a community, live in a very clean green environment.
“I urge the university members to always take care of the environment because if the environment is clean, they will be healthy and enjoy long life,” she said.Prof. Adenike Boyo, LASU’S Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), said that the initiative by CESSED was in line with the vision of the present administration in LASU.
Boyo said that LASU’s management was determined to make it the best in West Africa.
She urged LASU students and staff to make environmental clean-up a regular exercise.
Dr Adedoja Wusu, who represented African Centre of Excellence for Innovation and Transformation STEM Education of LASU, said that the centre donated 50 units of waste bin to CESSED to support a clean environment in LASU.
“Presentation of the waste bin is to support CESSED to commemorate World Clean-up Day,” Wusu said.
