Congo withdraws from U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers

Africa-Press – Gambia. Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team progressed to the fourth round of qualification for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after Congo’s U20 women’s national team withdrew from the qualifiers.

The Congo Football Association (FECOFOOT) wrote to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) cancelling the team’s participation citing travel challenges.Congo was scheduled to play Nigeria in their second leg of the third round of qualifying on December 17 in Lagos.

Nigeria won the first leg 4-0 at the Stade Alphonse Massemba-Débat in Brazzaville.

The remaining third round second fixtures are expected to take place between December 16 and 18.

The matches on the cards are: Burundi vs Tanzania, Ethiopia vs Botswana, South Africa vs Uganda, Ghana vs Zambia, Gambia vs Morocco and Guinea vs Senegal.

Cameroon is already into the fourth round after Gabon withdrew even before the first leg of matches which took place between December 2 and 4.

Only two teams will qualify and represent Africa during next year’s World Cup which will be held in Costa Rica from August 10-28.
