Africa-Press – Gambia. The UK has recorded 320,000 new Covid cases over the three days of Christmas, including 98,515 in the last 24 hours.
Those figures include the daily numbers that would normally have been published on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
But the statistics for today do not yet include Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland.
The figure of 98, 515 is the first time the number of positive cases of the virus have fallen below 100,000 since December 21.
It comes as Health Secretary Sajid Javid said no further coronavirus restrictions will be introduced in England before the new year but ‘people should remain cautious’.
Last week, Scotland and Wales announced post-Christmas Covid restrictions which came into force yesterday (December 26).
Conservative MPs earlier urged caution in going beyond Plan B in England, with veteran Tory Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown calling for a ‘wait-and-see’ approach to the impact of infections on hospital admissions.
In Scotland, social distancing of one metre will be required at large events and attendance will be limited to 100 people indoors if standing, or 200 if seated.
For outdoor events, the limit is 500 people.
From 5am today, nightclubs will close, table service will be required in venues where alcohol is being served – and the one metre rule will apply to hospitality and leisure settings.Nicola Sturgeon said the measures will be reviewed in three weeks.
Meanwhile in Wales, nightclubs will close and a maximum of six people will be allowed to meet in pubs, restaurants and cinemas.
Up to 30 people will be allowed at indoor events, while outdoors the limit is 50.
Two metre social distancing rules must be followed in public places and offices.
