Darboe Criticizes Barrow Administration Calls for Change

Africa-Press – Gambia. Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, has strongly criticized the performance of President Adama Barrow’s government and urged Gambians to vote for a change in the 2026 presidential election.

Speaking at a recent event in Mandinaring, Darboe accused President Barrow of neglecting his responsibilities, stating, “We need leadership at the State House that is fully engaged, because that place is not for sleeping—it is for hard work.”

Darboe further claimed that significant governance gaps exist within the State House and appealed to all Gambians to address these issues by voting out the incumbent administration in 2026. He described this as a necessary step to rescue the country from ongoing economic difficulties.

Highlighting the rising cost of living, Darboe warned that prices for essential goods have been escalating since 2021 and will continue to rise if President Barrow remains in power. “If Barrow is re-elected, a bag of rice could cost as much as D5,000,” he cautioned.

He also noted that despite inflation, salaries remain stagnant, and the Gambian Dalasi continues to depreciate, attributing this decline to the government’s failure to support key sectors such as tourism, a vital source of foreign exchange.

Darboe accused the Barrow administration of prioritizing personal gain over national interests, alleging widespread corruption and the unlawful allocation of public lands, including protected reserve areas.

Addressing the ongoing challenges faced by Gambian youth, Darboe lamented the increasing number of young people risking irregular migration, describing the current government’s leadership as directionless. “President Barrow is driving the bus but does not know the destination,” he remarked.

Concluding his remarks, Darboe emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming election: “The year 2021 is behind us, but 2026 is a pivotal moment—an opportunity we cannot afford to miss. It is a do-or-die situation for the future of our nation.”
