Darboe Criticizes Hamat Bah'S Threat to Sue Alkalolu

Africa-Press – Gambia. Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party, has voiced sharp disappointment over comments attributed to Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs Hamat N.K. Bah, who reportedly threatened to take legal action against village heads (Alkalolu) during the ongoing nationwide tour.

“I am surprised that Hamat can go on this tour to threaten Alkalolu, saying he will sue them. I saw it in a newspaper. What kind of talk is that?” Darboe said.

His remarks follow a report in The Voice newspaper stating that Minister Bah had warned he would pursue legal action against any Alkalo who prevents eligible citizens from registering in their village during the voter registration exercise.

Darboe questioned whether the minister still stood by his long-held criticism of former president Yahya Jammeh, suggesting that such threats contradict the principles Minister Bah once espoused.

“Was he not believing what he was saying about Yahya Jammeh? If he believed what he was saying about Jammeh was the truth, then he should not allow such words to be said in his presence, especially since he is the minister responsible for these people. He should not have allowed such,” Darboe said.

He argued that such actions reinforce negative public perceptions about politics. “This is why people think politics is dirty, though that is not the case,” he said. “But you cannot campaign against Yahya Jammeh for doing wrong and then turn around and do the same thing.”
