Darboe Defends Electoral Record, Cites Unfair Polls

Africa-Press – Gambia. United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and flag bearer ANM Ousainu Darboe has argued that his electoral record is defined by unfair polls, dismissing critics who cite his repeated presidential bids without victory as grounds to question his candidacy.

Speaking to a group of 50 new members who formally joined the UDP, Darboe said none of his presidential contests—including the 2021 election—were conducted under conditions he considers free and transparent.

“Even if I stood six times seeking the presidency, they have all agreed that, including the 2021 election, was not fair. So Ousainou Darboe has never stood for a fair and transparent election in this country,” he said.

Darboe insisted that flawed polls cannot be used to diminish his political credibility. “Sham elections are no elections. So no one can say he has stood for many elections. That is no valid reason,” he argued.

He also dismissed criticisms about his age, saying maturity and experience should be seen as assets, while voters should focus on candidates’ policies and programs rather than their years.

Turning to the new entrants, Darboe described their decision to join the UDP as timely, adding that their membership contradicts suggestions that the party cannot govern under his leadership.

“But you guys said that is not true and that Ousainu Darboe, as the leader of the United Democratic Party, could be the one to govern this country,” Darboe told the gathering.

He concluded that the influx of new supporters demonstrates that claims about his inability to lead are unfounded.
