Darboe Urges UDP Supporters to Respect Bensouda

Africa-Press – Gambia. Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, party leader and Secretary General of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on party supporters to continue showing respect to Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda following his withdrawal from the party’s flagbearer race and resignation as Organizing Secretary.

In a WhatsApp audio message, Darboe said he met with Mayor Bensouda on Saturday morning and has accepted the mayor’s decision. He urged party members not to respond with anger or insults.

“This morning, my son and nephew, Lord Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, came to inform me of his intentions. I accept and agree with his decision. Even though it is not my preference, this should not hurt or anger anyone. It is natural to feel sad, but we must remain respectful,” Darboe stated.

He emphasized that Bensouda’s resignation should not overshadow his contributions to the party.

“The position he resigned from is significant within the UDP. He campaigned for it and served diligently. His decision to step down should be accepted without belittling him. Remember his past contributions and the hard work he has done for the party,” Darboe said.

Darboe also highlighted the need for restraint and mutual respect among party members.

“Politics often comes with changes, and things can shift unexpectedly. We must not overstate or overreact to this situation. The respect you hold for Talib should remain intact,” he said.

He reminded members that although Bensouda resigned from his post, he remains a member of the UDP, and party members should continue to honor him.

“Even in stepping down from a position, he remains part of the party. The respect associated with his role is given by all of us, and it must be upheld,” Darboe added.

Concluding his message, the UDP leader urged members to maintain dignity and unity in their interactions.

“Let us act as one, recognizing that changes happen. We want to ensure that if we meet tomorrow, we can do so without regret,” he said.
