Africa-Press – Gambia. The daughters of the murdered British national, Shakina Chinedu disclosed that they had preferred Augustine Bangura [convicted killer] to face life imprisonment rather than death sentence.
That way, they believe the convict will pass through serious consequences of murder. Following Banjul High Court’s verdict against Augustine Bangura , a Sierra-Leonean who was found guilty of two counts of murder and theft, Shanaz Pantry ,a 33-year-old lady said that the death sentence passed against Bangura was like ‘’a shock for I did not know it was on the table’’.
Shanaz , however, stated that they [victims] preferred a life imprisonment, adding that a death sentence was an easy way out which according to her a life imprisonment would make Bangura [convict] to think about the consequence of taking a human life.
‘’We are not too sure if we wanted that, we really wanted life imprisonment because we feel that the case of a death sentence is an easy way out’’, Shanaz said.
She adduced that if one kills another only to be killed for the murder crime how is that a resolution to the victim and family, stressing that the same way they [victim’s family] have to suffer is the same way Bangura has to face. ‘’I am glad that he was found guilty of both charges’’ she stated.
For her part, Kamarla Pantry, a 34 –year-old daughter of Chinedu said the verdict that reflected how their mum [Chinedu] was murdered in cold-blood was not absolute justice, noting that they could only rejoice in absolute justice when they see their mum, Chinedu.
Kamarla, however, stated that the death sentence was justice in dispense of which according to her was a deterrent which totally condemned the criminal act of the convict [Bangura].
She stated that the trial Judge used his authority to impose the highest weight of punishment in condemning such heinous crimes.
‘’No body’s life is worth D80, 000 and some stolen goods, ‘’Shanaz stated.
