Africa-Press – Gambia. A torrential downpour has severely devastated the neighborhood of Ebotown, leaving many households flooded and residents voicing strong concerns about its impact. The rain, which began in the early hours of Saturday, 30th August 2025, caused substantial damage to homes and properties.
Many residents attributed the flooding to the lack of proper drainage canals to channel rainwater into the Ebo Town stream at ‘Badala.’ Others criticized the government’s recent construction of a concrete highway stretching from the Ebotown main junction down to the ‘Badala’ stream, arguing that it has worsened the situation.
“This constructed concrete road is more of a dismay to us than a privilege,” said resident Muhammed Lamin Faal. He argued that the road was built without proper drainage infrastructure to divert rainwater. “Ebo Town has faced flooding challenges in the past, but this year is something else. This road has caused us significant damage,” he added.
Another resident, Fatou Kajuna, described her frustration after her home was submerged. “All our belongings were floating in the water,” she said. “I couldn’t cook lunch yesterday. The flood entered our kitchen and flushed away the remaining rice. As we speak, there is no food in the house.”
Lamin Gaye also blamed the government for this situation, claiming that residents were not consulted before the road construction to know the direction water flows during the rainy season. “The government constructed this road without involving us. Now we can blame them for the consequences. You cannot construct a road without a waterway,” he stressed.
Ebo Town has long been a flood-prone area due to its swampy nature. However, since the completion of the new concrete road by the Gambia Government in May 2025, residents believe the flooding has become more severe.
As households struggle with waterlogged homes and damaged belongings, residents are pleading for government intervention. They are calling for the immediate construction of drainage canals or waterways along the highway to prevent a recurrence of such devastating floods.
