Africa-Press – Gambia. Gambia’s Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has called on citizens to embrace and celebrate the government’s decision to issue National Identity Cards to Gambians living in Mauritania.
Speaking during a recent media engagement, Dr. Ceesay described the initiative as a positive step aimed at safeguarding the rights of Gambians abroad.
“Gambians should even celebrate and be happy that we are extending support to some Gambians who are living in Mauritania and need support. I think the Government should be commended for that,” He Said.
Dr. Ceesay rejected allegations that the consular mission to Mauritania was politically motivated in preparation for the 2026 presidential elections. When asked whether the move was part of a strategy for a “do-or-die” election campaign, he dismissed the claims as baseless.
“I have heard people make that connection, and I find it laughable the government has no intention of doing such a thing,” He Said.
The minister explained that the decision followed reports of human rights violations against Gambians in Mauritania and the pressing need for many to obtain proper identification to regularize their status.
Dr. Ceesay emphasized that the initiative was conducted transparently and publicly announced.
He also pointed out that it is standard practice for many countries to offer consular services, including the issuance of ID cards, to their nationals living abroad.
“Consular Services, including ID card Issuance, are done by many countries for their citizens abroad,” He Said.
