Africa-Press – Gambia. Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has firmly denied accusations that he misled the public regarding the controversy surrounding the appointment of Auditor General Modou Ceesay.

Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Dr. Ceesay insisted that he never lied about the matter. He maintained that Modou Ceesay initially accepted the position of Auditor General before later declining it.

“I would not have the audacity to come and face the Gambian people and knowingly and intentionally mislead them for the purpose of misleading; I would never do that. That is not in my nature; it is not in my character to do,” Dr. Ceesay stated.

He dismissed suggestions that he fabricated the story, describing his critics as either “dishonest, gullible, or driven by ulterior motives.”

“Those who really were making insinuations that I was lying are either dishonest or gullible or had an ulterior motive, but I would never come here and lie to you,” he said.

According to Dr. Ceesay, his initial information indicated that Modou Ceesay had accepted the appointment, and it was only afterwards that he chose to decline. He argued that many rushed to conclusions without critically analyzing the sequence of events.

“If you have two sides of a story, what do you do as an intelligent person? And this is coming from people who are supposed to be educated. They say they are educated,” he remarked. “You critically analyze these two sides and look at gaps within the stories and then make a conclusion, and then you limit it to benefit from the doubt, but I have seen people jumping to conclusions,” he said.

The minister stood by his earlier comments despite a letter from Auditor General Modou Ceesay clarifying that he never accepted the position and had declined it outright. “He wrote a letter, I think two nights ago, saying that he never accepted the job and he automatically declined it,” Dr. Ceesay acknowledged, but added that his own statement was based on the information he had received at the time.
